There are many people in business today that do not fully understand the benefits of “mentoring”; which, if delivered correctly can have a huge impact on an employee who in turn, once motivated by “the magic of mentoring” will deliver significant benefits for their business.

Business LifebeltSadly there are businesses that see ‘mentoring’ as something ‘soft and fluffy’…  a ‘nice to have’. Whereas the truth is that mentoring can be a magical ‘business lifebelt’, saving its senior managers from drowning in a sea of inexperience.

There are those who believe that ‘mentoring’ and ‘coaching’ is actually the same thing. Though related, they are not the same. A mentor may coach, but a coach does not mentor. There is a subtle difference;

Mentoring vs. Coaching
Coaching is task oriented.  The focus is on concentrated issues, such as managing more effectively, speaking more articulately, or learning how to think strategically. This requires a content expert (coach) who is capable of teaching the coachee how to develop these skills.

Mentoring is development driven. Its purpose is to develop the individual (mentee) not only for the current job, but also for the future.

Mentoring is about ensuring that the mentee becomes:
* More self aware
* Takes responsibility for their career and….
* Directs their life and career in the direction they decide….
* Rather than leaving it to chance

The mentor’s role is to:
* Ask questions and challenge, while providing guidance and encouragement
* Mentoring allows the mentee to look more closely at themselves, their issues, opportunities and what they want in life and from their career.

Old Head vs. Young Shoulders
It is often said that you cannot buy experience; in other words you cannot put an older, wiser, more experienced head on young shoulders – you have to have been through life’s experiences to truly claim that you are ‘experienced’.

What mentoring does is utilize the experience of another to help (generally somebody younger than the mentor) to learn and develop by gaining insights from sharing the experiences of somebody more experienced, seasoned and senior…..the mentor.

Different Mentoring Profiles
There are of course many different mentoring style and types. The breakdown when it comes to age, experience and generations breaks down like this:

The ‘Traditionalist’ – The Retired Executive Mentor 
Traditionalists were born between the years 1922 – 1943.  These older and more experienced individuals have a respect for the rules, are fans of conformity and can be frugal minded. Technology for them is sometimes hard to grasp as unlike younger generations, they did not grow up with mobile devices, computers or even, in some cases, any electrical household appliances.

What they do have however is a lifetimes worth of knowledge and experience to share; and it would a foolhardy mentee that writes off the value of a traditionalist mentor. Many ‘traditionalists mentors’ go on to sit on business boards and/or come non-executives for this very reason.

The ‘Baby Boomer’ Mentor
So called as they are regarded as the ‘post war babies’ being born between the years 1944 – 1960 these workaholics are optimistic yet silent, seeking personal gratification. Calculators and paper calendars are second nature to this age group; many of whom would never be seen without their note-filled pads.

In today’s marketplace these experienced individuals make perfect mentors because not only do they have the required life skills and experience but they are also used to managing change because they have lived and breathed it during their lifetime.

The Generation X Mentor
Generation X was born between the years 1961 – 1980This generation is seen as self-reliant and often referred to as former latch key kids who are results oriented and fun. Regarded as realists because they will have given their heart and soul to a company; seeing their job as a job for life. They too have seen and experienced much change over their careers and can offer mentees useful insights into the way businesses have evolved and changed.

Which Groups Can Benefit?
The lower age groups of Generation X, and those that fall within Generation Y, are the two groups that stand to gain the most from mentoring. It is not beyond the bounds of possibility that somebody that falls within the lower age bracket of Generation X straddles the boundaries of being both a mentor and a mentee; this of course would very much be dependent of the new skills and knowledge that the mentor has coupled with what the  mentee personally requires.

Generation Y
Generation Y was born between the years 1981 – 2000. These tech savvy, highly socially conscious upwardly mobile folk  now represent the majority of today’s workforce. They are competitive and confident. This group is the new gold standard when it comes to courting, recruiting and engaging the employees and future employees for tomorrows workplace.

Generation Z
Generation Z was born between 2001 to present. These future employees and mentee are digital natives a 1,000 times over. Their likely first sentence is possibly….. “Where is the iPad?”

How are you are viewed?
Most of us at one time or another have pondered the thought of how others see us; but how many of us really know how we’ are  viewed by the myriad of people that we interact with on a daily basis? It is easy to assume that people see us in a way that matches our own self-image. However, experience and research shows that this is not always necessarily the case.

Your internal landscape 
Self-awareness is not only awareness of your “self”; it includes your ability to become aware of the emotional states of others and your relationship to society at large.  Not only are you able to be in tune with your internal landscape; you are better able to navigate the external world landscape all around you…..by developing your ‘emotional intelligence.’

Emotional intelligence 
The foundation to developing emotional intelligence otherwise known as “EI” which begins with addressing your “Intra-personal Self-Awareness” – by making friends with your feelings. This is an important step. This goes beyond simply a “bag of tricks.”  It is more than just learning how to stand back, pause and breathe…yes, this is an important tactic, but beyond this, there is the inner awareness of your emotional feelings.  There is a physiologic component to this.

Stop vilifying feelings 
When we finally stop vilifying feelings and treating them like they are an impossible embarrassment to own, we will be able to actually stop, stand back and pause and apply our “on demand” skills in real time.  When we can notice and intuitively pick up our mounting feelings before they come out full force to our conscious mind, we can truly hit the “pause” button and make sound decisions and choices.

  • We can “change our minds”
  • We can avoid being hijacked by our brain’s amygdala – a part of the survival centre of our brain that gets overused.
  • We can reconnect with gratitude and positive feelings of joy
  • When we focus on the positive, we can retrain our brains to take on a positive mindset by default
  • We can break the mind habit of negativity
  • We become more ‘self-aware’
  • We learn how to use our ‘emotional intelligence’ for better business results

Repression leads to rebellion 
The first step?  Be willing to stop trying, (and I do mean, “trying” , as you can’t actually do it) to deny you have feelings.  The feelings of gratitude and appreciation and other feelings are all just a part of being human. Repressing them is not the same as self-regulation that is healthy and effective. Repression leads to rebellion and suppression of your body’s emotional system periodically, meaning, it leads to emotional outbursts or even stress.  Your feelings can become stress producing, when you keep them bottled up…like stagnant water.  Ugh.

Raise mindfulness self-awareness
Instead, learn how to raise mindfulness through self-awareness. With self-awareness, you can learn how to “make friends with your feelings.”  You can calm down and control your fight-flight-freeze response over the long-term. Moreover once you become more ‘self-aware’ your ‘emotional  intelligence’ will automatically develop; therefore not only will you be able to know and understand your own feelings but also those of others around you. An important factor in today’s highly charged competitive world.

Rolling brain waves 
You can recognize that you are not your thoughts and feelings…they are more like rolling brain waves that you can learn to direct.  When you can do this, you will then be able to actually feel much more gratitude and appreciation with a feeling of authenticity and confidence.  You can change how you focus your mind.  You can live and work with much greater ease.  You can then set your mind – “your mindset” – for greater success.

Joy in your world
People often say that they spend too much time at work, sadly not always necessarily enjoying it. This blog explores a different approach to positive thinking and how you can put more joy back into your world.

Good ‘vibes’ you can radiate
When developing any relationship, particularly at work “gratitude” and “appreciation” are two of the most powerful “vibes” you can radiate. Even people at the very top still seek “gratitude” and “appreciation”. This is because they know that this create a healthy, productive mindset that typically leads to prosperity and health in all areas of life.  In fact,  “gratitude” and “appreciation” can help you become radiant.  Why?  Well because these “vibes” are the sources of joy.

Default mindsets
Joy is deeper than what we typically think of as happiness in that it is less situation-based.  Most people do not realize that gratitude can be made to be your default mindset.  Just to be clear, by mindset we mean where your mind is set.

From the inside out
If you believe that your happiness is due to a situational external noun, in other words, a person, place or thing – it will be very unstable indeed.  Cultivating gratitude and appreciation, as feelings – “vibes” – from the inside out will make you more confident, resilient and peaceful.

You can do this intentionally by focusing what you have to be grateful for or even drawing on past feelings of gratitude.  The trick is that it requires self-awareness in order to change your feelings, “on demand.”

Don’t become a victim
If we believe that we are victims of our emotions and feelings, we cannot be empowered.  Many people focus on the negative in the world around them, which increases their negative feelings in their mindset. We often refer to these people as seeing the “glass half empty” instead of “half full”.

Focus on the positives
If we believe that feelings are “bad,” we will stay afraid of them.  It is important to realize that if you focus on negative feelings, you increase this “vibe” in your mindset and demeanour.  If you are harbouring negative feelings – “vibes” – you will not only create stress in your body, you will not radiate “good vibrations” – your positive,  true, authentic charismatic self.

Change your mindset
By focusing on the positives we can actually change our mindset to feel much more gratitude and appreciation with a feeling of authenticity and confidence.  Yes you can change how you focus your mind.  You will find that you can live with much greater ease.  You can then set your mind – “your mindset” – for greater success.

With the arrival and increased use of Kindles, Nook readers and ipads many argue that traditional books are dead; some people however still like the look and feel of a paper book. Whatever your preference there can be no doubt that electronic books have features that paper books don’t.

With an electronic book you can see the screen clearly even in sunlight as well as being able to enlarge the print on the screen or plug in earphones and ‘listen’ to a book, which is great if relaxing, travelling or when on holiday. This ability to be able to enlarge the typeface is also a valuable factor for the visually impaired and for the more mature generation who prefer larger font size.

1. Reading expands your vocabulary
When reading literature of different genres, it is likely that you will encounter words you don’t usually use in your regular every day conversations. The beauty of this is that there is no need to search for a definition of every single word you don’t know because in most cases your brain will automatically tell you what the word means in the context of the piece. When reading, we imagine many details – characters, their clothes, scenery, objects and plots. We also need to keep in mind many facts in order to understand the book as a whole; therefore by reading we are training our memory and logic.

This skill is very useful in your other activities in life, whether at home or at work. That is because without realising it reading also helps develop objectivity and reasonable decision-making.

Reading provides insights into how others live their lives and do things; it also provides fantasy and escapism. For many without the fantasy and escapism of books there is no aspiration or desire to try and do things differently. Which business are you? Large, small or independent…..

Sometimes when we are running a business, whether large, small or independently owned, we don’t realize that creating a strong strategy is just as important for us as it is for any other business.

You need a strategy regardless 

Yes of course most large corporate businesses have a strategy of one type or another. Sadly though there is a misconception that smaller and independently owned businesses don’t need a strategy….this simply isn’t true and could prove costly.

Businesses grow and develop in many different ways

Some business owners are super organised and spend months planning their business strategy, and in some cases producing a huge document which covers the strategic business plan, plus executive summary, marketing plan and of course financial data; others launch their business without really thinking about where the money is going to come from or how they are going to market or maintain their business or generate new clients; or as is often the case you might find that you are somewhere in between.

Revisit

No matter how you started, it’s always worth revisiting your strategy and figuring out whether you are on the right track and whether the assumptions you made ‘yesterday’ still hold true in today’s marketplace.

Business values need to inspire you

When you approach your business strategy there are a number of key elements that you need to bring together. The first thing though, and certainly one that we at Partners in Solutions believe you must have, is actually one that many people don’t even think about, and that is the key area of defining your values.

The values that you focus on are the foundation of your business

Core values is the place that you come from when you are making decisions around branding, products or services, engaging your people and suppliers, developing partnerships and general day-to-day business and customer service focus. The values that you had when you started out, may not necessarily be the values that are most relevant to you today and it is always worth revisiting them at least once a year.

Before any business can start developing their Strategic Business Plan they must have a base upon which to build – they must know what their core values and qualities are. The ethos by which they wish to do business and by which they wish to be known and build a reputation on.

It can be difficult to know where to start with something like this, so instead think about the companies and brands that you most admire and ask yourself why this is so.

Your values need to come from the heart; they need to inspire you every day to build a business that is going to set the world alight – at least a little bit. They should reflect your uniqueness and will be the guide for your business strategy, your recruitment strategy and your product and or service strategy; however…..

The turn off!

Whenever and wherever you can avoid ‘management speak’ please do so as this is simply a big ‘turn off’ to anybody that reads them and more importantly, the people you work and interface with that have to deliver them. In a nutshell keep your business values simple and easy to understand. That way you stand a far better chance of actually living and breathing them on a day-to-day basis.

As business owners and managers there are certain things that we need to ‘know’ in order that we can competently and effectively fulfill our managerial role. Here are some top tips to help you get focused.

1. Know that everything requires time…

As a Business Manager…”know that”: Once you have clearly articulated your plans and goals that you need to stand back review and wait. Utilize this time to

- Visualizing what you want to achieve
- Where you want to be
- How you will profit from your business.
It is important that you feel good and enjoy what you see and accept what you get with gratitude. Pat yourself on the back and appreciate everything you accomplish.

2. Know and acknowledge the ‘power of team-work’…

As a Business Manager…”know that”: Business is best conduct by a team of like-minded people who understand that there is a job that has to be done. So, in an ideal world it is far better not to take relatives or friends into this team if you can possibly avoid it – unless that is you have worked together successfully before and have clearly defined and agreed roles and responsibilities.

3. Know what sacrifices you would be prepared to make…

As a Business Manager…”know that”: Managing business today is tough. You will undoubtedly have to make difficult choices and sacrifices. The key is to understand from the very beginning that sacrifices are necessary, and know what you are prepared to sacrifice for the success of your business; sacrifices that will make the best use of money and time, sacrifices that put the least amount of stress on relationships, business and otherwise.

4. Know that the strongest manager is the winner…

As a Business Manager…”know that”: If you want to be a winner you have to be strong, particularly in the face of adversity. You have to religiously believe in yourself and in your success….. No matter where you are and at all times. Distance yourself from negative people or people who doubt your abilities. Know that pessimism can kill ideas and enthusiasm.

5. Know that feedback is essential…

As a Business Manager …”know that”: The ability to be able to embrace feedback is essential to any business. It is also imperative to know and understand the difference between pessimism and constructive criticism. Always listen to the opinion of your customers, clients, colleagues, suppliers in fact anybody who interfaces with you and your business.

6. Know that there will times when you have to take risks…

As a Business Manager…”know that”: Successful business managers are not daunted by risk. That said too much risk is seldom good; but nothing really innovative or great is ever accomplished without some degree of risk, very often there can be quite a bit of risk to greatness. So don’t be afraid to take risks. Try new strategies, markets, venues etc as this always gives you a chance to make a better or improved profit.

7. Know your business to grow your business…

As a Business Manager…”know that”: This might sound obvious but it never ceases to amaze me how little some business managers know about their business or chosen marketplace. Stay alert. Read trade magazines and trade press. Attend industry events and net-work as appropriate to your business sector.

8. Know your limits…

As a Business Manager…”know that”: You are not the gatekeeper of every good idea; therefore if you are unsure about a situation, find and surround yourself with experienced competent people you like, respect and trust who can work with you and who will recommend a solution.

Don’t Dumb-Down

Recession - Don't 'dumb down'
“Dumbing down” is not an inevitable consequence of recession.
Can it really be a year ago since the glorious London Olympics brought so much joy to the world whilst the ever cautious economists were telling us that we were heading into ‘a double dip recession’; bringing with it a sense of doom and gloom. With this in mind I started to observe businesses more closely.

I can still recall the words of my University lecturer who proclaimed that one should “never, ever, ever dumb down in a recession”.

Is airline business mentality right?
I have told myself we would make up the loss to the economy as the great British sun seeking public got into their stride seeking holidays during 2013. Or would we?

Would the airlines allow us to? It is not just the budget airlines affecting the economy; it is virtually ever airline, which appears to be falling into the same business inefficiency trap.

More and more travellers are opting to take on board ‘hand luggage’ in order to avoid increasing charges for luggage check-in. The era of the airline wheelie trolley has arrived! Many airlines when confronted with 90%+ of their passengers at the boarding gate clinging desperately to their beloved wheelie bags have now realized that the capacity of today’s cabin stowage cannot cope.

10% of something is better than 10% of nothing
When this happens, airlines have taken to offering free luggage check-in at the gate. Such precious revenue is surely too good to be given away. The real message here is that these airlines have forgotten of the old adage of 10% of something is better than 10% of nothing. In other words if airlines had not decided to “dumb down” their luggage check-in service and instead set their luggage check-in fees at a reasonable level then they would actually make more money!

Never, ever, ever dumb down in a recession
My lecturer was right that one should “never, ever, ever dumb down in a recession”. Whatever your belief there can be no doubt that some businesses are starting to “dumb-down”, which should not be a natural consequence of recession. Let us learn the lessons in that:

• Cutting services or quality of products in a service industry is suicidal; customers will go elsewhere for good service and quality products.

• There can be no doubt that ‘recruiting’ on the cheap is false economy.

• Making do with existing teams that have not received any training or talent development support will dumb down businesses automatically, and equally as bad the competition are more likely to steal your ground and market share.

In summary the sooner businesses that adopt this thinking recognise that “dumbing down” is not an inevitable consequence of recession and reverse the process, the more likely they are to survive this recession and the years ahead.

Leaders with ‘attitude’.

attitude is everything
Genuine “Leaders” have an attitude about them

Have you ever noticed that the leaders you admire have an ‘attitude’ about them?

This is because people who are true ‘leaders’ are not easily discouraged by obstacles and issues that might deter others. In fact, they don’t see them as “obstacles and issues,” but problems to solve and situations to work through.

A real leader will work and play hard to find and keep their ‘team’ and or business together.

In essence….

Leaders are not daunted by failure:
Leaders believe that if you fear failure too much then you’ll have a hard time getting past breakfast!

Leaders are not daunted by rising before the sun does:
Show me a successful lazy entrepreneur and I’ll show you a purple horse. A true leader will work as hard as you.

Leaders are not daunted by hard work:
In fact they don’t think of it as “work.” Instead they think of it as an investment in you, their team and the business….in your joint business partnership.

Leaders are not daunted by risk:
Too much risk is seldom good; but nothing really innovatively great is ever accomplished without some degree of risk, very often there can be quite a bit of risk to achieving greatness.

Leaders not daunted by ownership and responsibility:
Leaders have no choice but to take it, Leaders believe that if you want the rewards then you and they have to ‘go with the flow’ and also take ownership and responsibility along the way.

Leaders are not daunted by conflict:
Conflict is the currency of leadership; you have to be able to handle it effectively or your team, and other colleagues won’t want to follow you.

Leaders are not daunted by what they can’t see with the naked eye:
Vision in a business means looking past the horizon to opportunity invisible to others.

Leaders are not daunted by bare forearms:
As in the kind that goes with rolled-up sleeves and being part of a wider team.

Leaders re not daunted by the unknown:
True leaders work at their business relationships and look for new ideas. They are open to try new things to maintain their business growth.

Leaders are not daunted by admitting fault:
A real leader instinctively know that too much hubris, excessive pride or arrogance and they will have trouble being with others, which of course they need to in order to accomplish what they want and need to be fulfilled themselves.
